Fairly recently Staple Design hooked up with Polyphony Digital top celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Gran Turismo game series. The party, dubbed Downshift 2008, brought on board Lotus and Eric Haze to celebrate. Haze detailed the process in his blog recently:
Last month I was blessed with the opportunity to customize a brand new
Lotus “Exige” as part of a multimedia event called “Downshift 2008″,
which was organized by Jeff Staple to help celebrate the 10th Anniversary
of the Sony / Playstation video game “Gran Turismo”…
Though I have created other custom cars and motorcycles before,
in the past I have always approached them as more of a designer
and art director, working closely with factory sponsored paint + body shops,
who then produced the final artwork according to my specs…
This time I chose to approach the challenge in a much more hands on way,
simply working with a brush and paint to achieve a more organic result
when viewed in person, also in keeping with the freestyle and minimalist
approaches I have been taking with a lot of my work these days in general…
It’s more than a little nerve racking walking up to a brand new $60K sportscar
with a brush and black paint and straight just going for it…
( especially using “1 Shot”, the quick drying and very unforgiving
old school pinstripers enamel that was best suited for the job )
and considering I didn’t even get my hands on prepping the car
until the saturday before a thursday night grand opening,
it was do or die from the time I thinned down the first can of paint…
no magic tricks, no smoke and mirrors, no safety net.
5 very focussed days later I was putting the final strokes on the car….

As you are all keenly aware, one of us at the shop celebrated a birthday last week. Yeah…the big 26…great, right? Anyway, among the gifts of frankincense and mer was a gift wrapped in some really outstanding packaging. After carefully unwrapping the box it looked like our good friend (who is fully 1/4th of the recently started blog Helloooooo.com) had bestowed a most radical timepiece upon us. It came in the form of the Timex 80: a classic in the walmart-come high fashion wristwatch game. These things rule. So simple, so clean and the Indiglo is official.

To add a little seasoning to the Black Friday madness, we have received and will be releasing the limited edition Supra Timbo Skytop. This shoe needs no introduction, and if you are one of the many who has emailed, called or asked in-shop about these…now is the time. We have a fairly limited run of sizes so please don’t sleep on these. The shoes will go on sale when the shop doors open at 11am. These are first come, first serve and, unfortunately, not subject to the Black Friday Sale terms.
If you haven’t caught on by now, we are putting together a bike to display in the shop (as well as to play in traffic). The parts are slowly trickling and it’s going to be totally trick custom, but until then here is a great way to mock-up your dream ride. Developed by the guys at Pedal Mafia, who have just started offering custom 1/9th scale bikes dubbed PedalID, it’s actually pretty cool to be able to play around with custom colors and layouts. Stay tuned for the launch of our build sometime around the new year.

Well, it looks like the dynamic electro duo known by the cross, leather and so-me graphic direction might just be getting a little lazy. After admitting that their album contained tons uncleared samples (and what electronic music doesn’t?), a picture surfaced of the duo playing with a midi controller unplugged.

Look at the concentration in his eyes! He is tweaking that music SO GOOD! Yeah baby…oh…wait. Yeah, sorry to burst the bubble, but they don’t play live. Not sure how you take it, but it doesn’t bug us in the least. Honestly, Justice is performance art and there is just no way that they could have as high of a production value in their shows if they were playing ‘live’. At their show in Dallas earlier in the year, we were amazed just watching the guys on the light board. In fact, you could probably argue that the light and sound guys are really the ones performing at those shows. Bottom line…Justice is PERFORMANCE art: they are dope producers and they put on a hell of a live show. Should be care that perhaps there is really nothing going on behind all those lights (besides a lit cigarette dispenser)?
Honest mistake though…he apparently plugged it back in.

…James here at the shop has taken up the noble task of growing a mustache. Noble, you say? Yes, passed down from an old Aussie tradition, the charity Movember asks men around the world to spend the month of November (now known as Movember) to grow their facial hair for a cause. But not just any facial hair…mustaches, sweet mustaches. You know you have been looking for a cause to jump on the bandwagon and grow an ironic hipster mustache. Here is your excuse…
Well, start you engines because on Saturday Movember 29th Centre will be sponsoring Dallas’ first and foremost mustache pageant at Rubber Gloves in Denton. The event runs from 9 till 2 with all proceeds from the $5 cover charge going straight to charity supporting men’s health. There will be plently of prizes, giveaways and plenty to drink. Anyone can enter the contest, but make sure you know the rules….because beards are NOT mustaches. And no worries if you are the fairer sex, free mustaches will be given out at the door.

Was rolling through Neiman’s over the weekend and stumbled across these Alexander McQueen rolling luggage he did for the Samsonite Black Label. Never seen them in person, but they look pretty rad…on a shelf. There is just no way you could get me to actually use one. Would you?
