February 26th, 2008 MHI :: Spring ‘08 Collection :: No Future

Recently received a shipment from the UK filled with some tees and hoodies from Maharishi’s MHI line. The Spring 2008 collection explores the theme ‘No Future’. Referencing pop culture classics like 1984, Metropolis Blade Runner and the like, the line draws on and plays with apocalyptic images. We could go on for a while, but we’ll let the pictures speak for themselves:

February 22nd, 2008 Nubrella :: A Sure Hit

This is frankly brilliant. A hands-free umbrella is perfect for walking to work while yapping on your phone with one hand and cradling a cup of coffee with the other. Unfortunately it’s just never going to make it past the “my friends will laugh at me” stage, because they will. They will laugh so very hard. It’s a cruel, backwards society we live in, and it’s no wonder we don’t have flying cars yet. That said, you can destroy your own fashion credibility today for a mere $59.99. Maybe the fanny pack types will accept you, but we can’t make any guarantees.

You will positively see this in the near future as you kill time on a flight looking at the catalog in your seat-back pocket. It will be right next to the personal hovercraft.

February 20th, 2008 Etsy.com :: The one-off Ebay

etsy.jpg

I was just recently referred to a site called Etsy.com recently and I have to say, there is some pretty interesting hand-made product featured. You can find just about any type of crazy nick-knack you could ever want to see - some of it great and some pretty terrible (but I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder). Perhaps the coolest functionality of the site is the ability to search for locally produced items, search an interactive globe for the most recently submitted items and even look through a 3-d generated time-line of products. If you didn’t understand those descriptions just click HERE and see for yourself. Or for a little history, check out the Etsy Wiki.

February 13th, 2008 New Artist :: Wale

wale_main.jpg

I am always weary of calling an artist ‘new’ because generally they have been honing their craft for years before they ever break into the mainstream conscious. Recently, after listening to quite a bit of Mark Ronson I noticed he was working with a vocalist that went by the name of Wale. Given that Ronson is generally a good indicator of emerging talent, I searched around a bit and found some of his recordings. Blown away. This guy has some serious skills and though he is haggard with comparisons to Lupe Fiasco and Kanye, he really stands out in my eyes.

After nabbing the URB cover alonside Justice touting his remix of D.A.N.C.E., Wale is in a sprint to breath some fresh air into the rap game. While the single Nike Boots made some headlines as iTunes single of the week, it really doesn’t do Wale justice. Instead go download his mix-tape he put together with Nick Catchdubs, who co-founded Fools Gold Records with A-Trak. Now if he isn’t in the right company then I dont know who is. Anyway, you owe it to yourself to download his mixtape…come on, it’s free:

February 10th, 2008 David ‘Shadi’ Perez :: Photography

Having done fashion shoots for anyone from BBC to Anything to W)Taps and directed video for anyone from Cypress Hill and House of Pain to American Eagle Outfitters, David Perez, or Shadi as he is known, is according to his bio…

…one of the most compelling photographers of his generation. Known for his ability to capture the spirit of whomever appears before his lens, Shadi’s vision is nothing less than stark, engaging, and consistently provocative.

A 60’s child, born in New York City and raised in Bronx; Shadi was heavily influenced by his creative parents. He was exposed to Simon and Garfunkel, Broadway Soundtracks and Latin Jazz Fusion at a very young age. His first exposure to photography was in viewing pictures his father took skydiving with his Leica during his service in the military. Those photos left an indelible mark on the young man and kicked off a passion that he has carried throughout his life.
